I’d like to know where time goes? We are half way through the month of June, and I feel I’m still processing May. I can’t stop thinking about these statistics I heard from a sermon on a podcast last week. The stats are based on how the average American spends their time.
There are 168 hours in a week. Full-time workers work on average 47 hours per week and commute 4 hours per week. That gives a total of 51 hours a week for work. Sleep is given on average 9 hours a day or 62 hours a week. Thirty hours a week is given to watching television. The average life expectancy in the U.S. is 79 years. The amount you work, sleep, and watch tv, leaves you at 69 years out of the 79-year life. Are you as freaked out by these stats as I am?! I can hardly wrap my brain around it. Talk about a reality check. Yes work is necessary, and sleep is important, but thirty hours wasted on tv is a little much!
Since moving to the countryside, my husband and I agreed on not buying satellite tv because it’s a luxury expense we can’t afford. Instead, we share streaming websites with our family. I find we don’t watch as much tv now that we don’t have live tv. I can’t just hit the button on the remote. Instead, I have to log into my streaming account and think about what I want to watch. Well, sometimes that takes too much effort, and I move on to doing something else around the house.
The tv stat bothers me because I think about all that wasted time we could have spent doing better for ourselves. I’m all for a mental break from reality, but not to the point where it’s taking years away from us. I know from time to time I need to re-evaluate my priorities in life. A big part of why I started B-BEATEOUS was to hold myself accountable to workout and not pile on the couch. I post ahead of time, so I set myself up for success. Just like when I meal prep on my days off from work. I prepare enough food for lunch and dinner to last through the days both my husband and I work. That way, we are not tempted to eat junk food, and we save money by not ordering out. It’s a routine that keeps us healthy. Being healthy is a hard job to maintain, but the benefits are worth it.
